I must admit I am getting more and more confused about the Butlins monorails now! The ones in the link above, from Skegness, don't look ANYTHING like a Butlins monorail to me!!! If someone had shown me that picture randomly, I would never have known it was a Butlins one!
What happened???
When did Skegness get those horrible, ugly looking monorail carriages?! And why?
Mind you... they do look more like the ones at Beaulieu!!! (The plot thickens...)

Skegness originally had the proper traditional bullet-nose monorails (and in fact they were the first of those type monorails in Britain). The newer ones in your photo (and yes they were ugly) were installed in much more recent years (can't remember exactly when). I think it was after there was a minor incident of some sort involving a fault or minor collision with the old trains.

I'm not sure. It might have been due to some idiot whinging about ''health and safety'' even though nothing at all had gone wrong. Can't remember which.

I do know the new ones were there until 2003 (well after the skyline was built), and that they were only used for a few years (although that's longer than the Rhyl one!)

Morning all.

Does anybody know if there are any ex-Butlin monorail cars out-of-use or for sale anywhere? If you wouldn't mind getting in touch, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks

Tim

Hi timbo. There are a couple of carriages including a drivers cabin from the Minehead one at Minehead first school. They are painted green (but still very recognisable and inside looks untouched) and are static on the school playground. The kids use it as a climbing frame / somewhere to sit in and play.

It's just the actual carraiges, no moving parts or track pieces.

When we went and looked at it last May the school did say they were thinking of getting rid of it because it was costing too much to maintain.

If you're interested and have somewhere safe to put it I'd get in contact with the school. I think it's on Townsend road, Minehead.

There are two of the modern aluminium monorail carriages/driver sections/motors from Skeggy Butlins in a field by the main road through Theddlethorpe (North of Mablethorpe). You can't miss them! They were up for sale on Ebay a while back but no takers - very big and heavy.

I'd be willing to if I had a suitable vehicle, but I don't sorry.
